Copaiba Essential Oil

health care medicine Oct 13, 2017

Ok, this is the big one. Of the new oils added to doTERRA this fall, Copaiba (co-pie-EE-ba) is certainly one of the most versatile and unique. Safe for aromatic, topical, and internal use, Copaiba essential oil is likened to Frankincense for its usefulness.

Copaiba has a woody, smoky scent, and is derived from resin Copaifera reticulate, Copaifera officinalis, Copaifera coriacea, and Copaifera langsdorffii plants in Brazil.

Some benefits of Copaiba:

  • Antioxidant properties
  • Nervous system support
  • Skin support (promotes clear & smooth skin along with reducing the appearance of blemishes)
  • Cardiovascular, neurological, digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular, and immune support
  • Anti-inflammatory properties

I have started adding a couple of drops of Copaiba to my capsule in the morning, which also has 3 drops of Frankincense and 3 drops of DDR Prime. I have also been adding a drop or two to my face lotion.

There’s a lot of buzz going on about CBD, and how Copaiba fits into the mix. Linked is an article from a doTERRA chemist, explaining it all! If you’re not a “read all the info” kind of person – here’s the gist:

We have an endocannabinoid system within our body, with the main receptors for cannabinoids being CB1 and CB2. A variety of compounds can bind with these receptors.

There are 3 types of cannabinoids:

  • Endocannabinoids – produced naturally by the body
  • Synthetic cannabinoids – found in some pharmaceutical products
  • Phytocannabinoids – produced by plants such as Copaifera & Cannabis

Marijuana and hemp oil both contain cannibinoids, and can bind with those receptors.

Copaiba does not contain the same cannibinoids as marijuana and hemp (THC and CBD), nor is it the same plant. It contains a cannabinoid called beta-caryophyllene (BCP). BCP can interact with the CB2 receptors, hence giving benefits of immune modulation, reducing inflammation, calming the nervous system etc.

So to be really clear:

  • Copaiba is not hemp or marijuana, nor does it contain THC or CBD. Copaiba is 100% THC free.
  • Copaiba contains beta-caryophyllene which is considered a dietary cannabinoid.
  • The beta-caryophyllene can interact with the CB2 receptors in the body, hence giving similar effects and benefits to other types of cannibinoids.

Copaiba is a great oil for all ages, works well in blends, and has lots of health-giving properties. We just need to stay really clear on what it is and what it isn’t with regards the cannabinoid system as that can get confusing for people. I believe that Copaiba and frankincense are a mighty powerful combination and do well when used together.
