DIY Hair Perfume

Hair perfume? That’s a thing? Well, yes it is. In fact, once I started using scented sprays for my hair, I never went back to not using them. I don’t mean commercial hair sprays that have artificial ingredients and chemicals in them, I mean all natural, non-toxic hair spritzes that are just for the pleasure of the scent and the feeling of freshness they bring. This DIY hair perfume has such a lovely fragrance – try it, you’ll see what I mean!

This is all you need to get your hair perfume put together:

  • 1/3 cup rose water
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 5 drops Ylang Ylang
  • 4 drops Rosemary
  • 5 drops Sandalwood
  • 3 drops Lavender
  • 4 drops Grapefruit

Just combine all the ingredients in a glass spray bottle, shake and spray on your hair. You can adjust the amounts of each oil, or add new scents that you like more. Be a little careful if you’re out in the sun a lot as citrus oils are photosensitive and could lighten your hair (takes me back to high school days when we all rinsed our hair in lemon juice hoping it would turn us the perfect shade of blond). I love the variety of aromas in this blend, but you could keep it more simple too, just using one or two oils.

There are so many simple and creative ways to use essential oils – this is a great one so you can enjoy their scent all day long. And if you don’t wear perfume it’s nice just to have a hint of natural fragrance. These oils are easier and safer to wear around chemically-sensitive people too, as it won’t trigger a negative response in the way regular perfumes can. We are a scent-free office because our patients are so sensitive, and yet we can enjoy essential oils all day long because they’re so pure and non-toxic. I’ve even been known to use it on the dog in between baths, and I’m going to try adding a little fractionated coconut oil and using it as a softening spray for Valentina’s hair too, instead of using a detangling spray as we do now.
