Using Binders to Overcome Candida
Oct 10, 2015You hear me talk about Candida overgrowth a lot – it’s a big problem for many people these days, especially women. There are various ways to address Candida, such as adopting a low sugar/ low carb diet, using natural anti-fungals such as pau d’arco and garlic, and even using anti-fungal medications such as nystatin and diflucan. Another way is by using binders to overcome Candida. A patient the other day told me of a mix she uses and loves, so I thought I’d share it with you.
Before I do, I want to preface it by saying that this is one way to bind. I tried it the other day, it’s not the easiest thing to get down. If I had all the stuff in capsule form I probably would have opted for that instead. However, this patient of mine reported that within two days of starting this mix (she did it for a week per month for a couple of months), she felt more energy, clearer headed and her gastrointestinal function improved.
Here’s the blend:
- 1 tablespoon food grade diatomaceous earth
- ½ tablespoon bentonite clay
- 1 heaping tablespoon psyllium husk
Mix with plain yoghurt (coconut yoghurt preferred), or some apple sauce, follow with large glass of water. I would suggest starting with 1/2 the amount of each the first day or two just to ease into it.
The premise of this is that the diatomaceous earth can actually damage the cells of Candida, hence killing them. The bentonite clay acts as a sponge, drawing the Candida to them, and the psyllium husk works to “sweep” the bowels so it helps it all get out.
I’m going to do it every day this week and see how it is.
If this mix seems too much, there is a way simpler way to get binders in – I use a product called GI Detox by Bio-Biotanical. It’s a blend of activated charcoal and pyrophyllate clay, and it will work in a similar fashion, it’ll just be harder to get the quantities of the above blend using individual capsules. You could also add psyllium husk capsules to that.
The powder blend would be more potent and certainly more cost effective. It should be taken at least one hour apart from other supplements and medications so that it doesn’t bind those too inadvertently. It doesn’t taste like much, it’s pretty bland, it just has a gritty kind of consistency. But given how Candida operates, and the different mechanisms this blend has for helping to rid the body of it, I think it’s a definite winner overall.
